Made error on application, what do I do?
Applied for a Spring Insight/Spring Week and my CV is all fine. However, the application required me to fill out some pre application details like my personal info, grades, motivation questions etc. What I’ve realised is I made two idiotic mistakes on the application form as I filled it out at like 2am. Firstly, I forgot to change my graduation year so it’s on the form as August 2024 (not 2027). Another mistake I realised I made was getting a tense wrong in one of my motivation questions, the error being I wrote ‘I strongly believing these X’ instead of ‘I strongly believe these X’. I’m actually so fucking annoyed since I did incredibly well on the online assessment. Should I email the HR/team in charge of the Spring Program and make them aware of these mistakes. Would they be able to fix them for me or should I not make them aware of this.
In all honesty am I just going to get rejected?
First, I don't know and I don't think anyone on this forum does for sure (all of this sorting through applications is done by HR, and I suspect few of them spend time on WSO).
But
You know this already, but attention to detail is a key attribute for IB in general - if you have the option of not doing applications at 2am (you do), then don't.
That said, I don't think anyone cares about the tense error. What's more important is the graduation date as that may make you straight ineligible. If HR don't know there was a mistake, I think you'll be immediately declined.
HR get far too many applications to clarify what might be clerical errors, so my advice is to reach out and highlight ONLY the graduation date mistake. You don't have much to lose by doing this.
Good luck and hope it works out
Yeah definitely not going to be doing applications that late again, little lesson learnt from this 100%. Something I might add is that there was one question about when my studies end (which I put 7/2027), and the other as to when my graduation date is which I put down wrong. Does that maybe slightly help.
I’ve slightly changed my post to show the tense error because I think my post made it sound a bit less worse than it actually is. I might just be overthinking it idk but I’d rather someone just tells me straight up rather than I stew over it for the next few days. I did actually get through to the HR about an earlier, unrelated issue with my application really quickly so I’ve just sent them an email explaining the date error. Fingers crossed they’re able to help in the morning.
Thanks!
You're way over-thinking the tense thing (I re-read the edited post). This is minor and for sure wouldn't impact an otherwise good application.
If I can offer a bit of life advice, try not to stew on things you can't change. Learn from mistakes, sure. But in what you spend your limited time on this earth doing, try to ask "will thinking about this / finding this out / doing this thing impact my decisions?"
One small grammar mistake is no big deal, just don’t do it again.
Graduation date is an issue as you’ll be automatically refused if your uni years don’t line up (I.e only eligible for SWs if first year etc). So YES email HR ASAP
I’ve just fully clarified the grammar mistake because I think I inadvertently made it sound less worse. Hoping that it’s still considered small lol.
I’ve emailed HR now so yeah hopefully they can fix it / make a note of it.
