Missing Week 1 of SA (pls advise)

Hey guys!

My term time clashes with the first week of the SA. Since I'm on a student visa I can only work 20 hours that week. Do you think HR will accommodate this? Has anyone faced a similar issue/seen summer interns miss a couple of days in training week? Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, missing the first week of training during a summer internship can be tricky but not impossible to navigate. Training week is crucial as it sets the tone for the internship, introduces you to HR, your peers, and the program's expectations. However, HR departments are often aware of visa-related constraints and may accommodate such situations.

Here’s what you can do: 1. Communicate Early: Reach out to HR as soon as possible to explain your situation. Be clear about your visa restrictions and the specific days you’ll be unavailable. 2. Propose Alternatives: Ask if you can attend training virtually or catch up on missed sessions through recorded materials or one-on-one sessions. 3. Unpaid Attendance: Some interns have asked if they can attend training unpaid until their work eligibility starts. This might be an option worth discussing with HR. 4. Leverage Pre-Assigned Materials: If there’s any pre-training homework or materials, ensure you’re fully prepared to hit the ground running once you’re able to work full-time.

HR teams are generally understanding of such issues, especially when they’re informed in advance. Missing a couple of days isn’t ideal, but with proactive communication and a willingness to adapt, it’s manageable.
