Odds of not getting allocated to preferred team as Summer Analyst

I'm currently in the networking period of the team allocation process for the BB I will be interning at this summer.

Does it ever happen that incoming summer analysts get allocated to a team that wasn't even in their top 6? If yes, is this a common occurence?

For instance, he provided a lot of information on how to find internships: using searchfunder.com, targeting wealth management, small private equity shops, and regional boutique investment banks. Additionally, he helped me prioritize the things I currently needed to work on, such as a 3.7+ GPA, and getting involved in case competitions and finance clubs on campus.
