Offer at Risk from 'Unverifiable' Internship? (UK Grad Role)
Hey everyone,
Would appreciate some insight on my situation, as the wait is brutal.
The Good:
- I successfully completed a summer internship at a BB in London.
- I accepted a conversion offer for a full-time graduate role.
The Problem:
- My background check report (done by Sterling) just came back.
- An internship I did a while ago in China has been flagged as "unverifiable."
- The reason it's unverifiable is that it was an informal internship arranged through a relative to get some industry exposure. There was no formal contract or HR record, which is pretty common for student gigs there.
Action Taken:
- After HR saw the report, they reached out. I've already sent them a detailed and fully transparent email explaining the context – that it was informal, how it was arranged, and that I knew it wouldn't be verifiable through a standard process.
My Question: How likely do you think it is they'll rescind the offer over this? I know compliance can be a black box. Has anyone seen this happen before or have any data points?
Thanks in advance.
If this was arranged through a relative, why can't this relative simply confirm in writing that you did this? Or they could ask for a brief email confirmation from the Chinese company?
My relative left the firm so I only have his personal QQ email. Would this be a red flag to the company?
The more relevant work experience is your local one. The Asian referral you can (somehow) ask for, maybe via email.
In the future, only list experience you have a reference for.
I can almost guarantee this won't matter.
You're not the first and won't be the last person to have an unverifiable internship from early in their student days. Pretty rare for people to get offer rescinded at background check stage regardless.
Thanks! I'm just very anxious out of fear they think I'm lying. I was looking at the process they're also conducting from other people that are about to join with me in the grads class and it seems they are really really strict. So I am really afraid they might think I'm lying.
As I said, it probably won't matter. You're not the only person this has happened to. There's probably like several threads every season where someone freaks out over this and it's always fine. It also happened to me and was completely fine.
Very unlikely this will matter. People are under the false assumption that HR is trying to find a way to axe you.
Most likely they will try to verify the employment with you directly. Chill brotha
