Picking a group at a mid-tier BB

I was lucky to get an offer for a summer internship with a mid-tier BB in London for next summer.

I was asked to provide my group preferences and chose FSG, C&R & M&A. These are top groups and they might get oversubscribed (according to someone who interned there this summer). An hr told me that they organise networking calls with reps from the respective groups so that you could get to know them a bit better.

Considering that most kids are likely to try to get into one of these groups, are there ways to increase your chances of getting into one yourself? I've heard that networking with current employers can be useful but nothing more than that.

Thanks for your response - do you know by any chance who actually decides on what group an intern gets assigned? Is it done by hr or by the business?
