Post grad IB internships

Hi everyone,

I will be graduating from a top UK business school next summer. With not enough M&A experience on my CV, I am looking to do a post-grad internship (SA / Offcycle) next summer after graduation. Does anyone have any leads on which London bank offices accept interns who have just completed their master's.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for securing a post-grad internship in Investment Banking (IB) in London:

  1. Target Banks and Networking:

    • Focus on well-known banks, boutiques, or middle-market (MM) firms in your country. Firms like BNP, Macquarie, and Baird can be good starting points.
    • Networking is crucial. Even though it might not be as emphasized in the UK as in the US, having connections can significantly improve your chances.
  2. Application Strategy:

    • Apply to a wide range of banks, including both bulge bracket (BB) and elite boutique (EB) banks. This includes firms like Goldman Sachs (GS), JPMorgan (JPM), Morgan Stanley (MS), Rothschild, Moelis, and Lazard.
    • Timing is critical. Make sure to note all application deadlines and apply as early as possible in the application process.
  3. Leverage Your Experience:

    • Highlight any relevant experience you have, even if it's not extensive. Your upcoming internship in Investment Banking (M&A) at the largest bank in your country will be a valuable addition to your CV.
    • Consider applying directly for full-time roles at some BBs and EBs, especially those that have hired candidates without prior internships at the bank.
  4. Alternative Paths:

    • If securing a direct internship proves challenging, consider doing a master's program at a top UK school (e.g., LBS, LSE, Oxbridge, Imperial, Warwick). This can make recruiting easier and provide additional networking opportunities.
    • Smaller boutique banks and MM firms that don't run spring weeks might still have spots available for summer analysts. These positions can offer competitive pay and valuable experience.
  5. CV Optimization:

    • Ensure your CV is tailored to the London market. Familiarize yourself with the format and expectations for CVs in the UK.
    • Create two versions of your CV: one with your actual graduation date and another with a graduation date that includes a year abroad, if applicable. This can help you apply for different types of roles.
  6. Preparation:

    • Prepare thoroughly for online tests and interviews. Practice with people who have gone through the process at the banks you're targeting.
    • Execution is key. Be ready to perform well in all stages of the application process.

By following these steps and leveraging your upcoming M&A internship, you can improve your chances of securing a post-grad internship in London. Good luck!
