Renege MM IB Summer Analyst offer for Amazon SWE Intern

I already signed a summer internship offer with an MM (think Baird/Blair/Lincoln/Piper/DC Advisory). However, I just got an offer from FAANG (Amazon specifically) for Software Engineering Intern role.If it's a BB, I wouldn't hesitate to pick BB since I know I prefer banking over tech even though I know I can do both well (I'm CS and Finance majors).Yet, with Amazon brand name, I am hesitate. But I will have to renege my offer from MM. How would that affect my future employability with BB/EB full time? Thank you!I'm also an international student studying in the US for more context.

You said you're an international right? Your primary concern shouldn't be future employment, it should be your visa. Unless I'm mistaken, Amazon does a really good job with sponsoring internationals. Don't know if that'll be the case with your MM. If I were you, I'd go with Amazon. If visa issues are somehow not a problem for you, then I'd go with the MM offer. Much, much easier to get a FAANG FT offer than it is to get a solid banking offer after you graduate, and you can use the MM internship to springboard into a BB/EB position.

Yes, for sure. I will reach out to HR at MM firm I signed with. From talking to my interviewer, he said the firm does sponsor. Would it be bad to renege the offer if it turns out that they won't sponsor full-time? Thanks!

I wouldn’t say so. If they don’t sponsor that’s extremely important, especially if your interviewer said/strongly implies they do. Even if it does burn bridges, any company would fire any employee the second they exhaust their usefulness to the firm, so don’t feel bad. If I were the person speaking to you, I would totally understand reneging due to visa stuff, that’s an incredibly tough thing to navigate and I wouldn’t blame you for putting that above pretty much everything else.

SWE at Amazon and it's not even close. It's an MM, not GS. With Amazon internship you can get even better SWE FT and they also are really good at sponsoring.

If you go with Amazon internship, you can also get BB/EB FT (especially in their tech groups). As an Amazon SWE they know that you’re smarter than an average IB person and like I said it would help for tech groups.

Thanks for the response. The only thing is that I have to renege my MM offer... And how realistic it is to get into Tech group for FT at BB/EB since most firms take FT analysts from their intern classes?

To be brutally honest, you have slim to 0 chance going from MM to a top BB/EB in tech group FT. If you are open to lower tier BB and possibly non tech groups i think its possible.

There are so few FT spots open. Tbh if i were you I would take an atypical approach. Take Amazon SWE, do a tech banking internship in between now and your AMZ internship. Look up local boutiques in your school area and do an unpaid internship. Then, you can spam people come FT and say you realized late that you wanted to do IB and not swe.
