Reneging

What's the deal with reneging? I've seen posts of people losing both offers after they reneg but does this still happen? How would they even find out that you're going to another bank unless you post it on LinkedIn or something?

Also, if I were to reneg on a 2022SA position now (aka a couple of months before start), would I have a higher chance of getting my offers rescinded?

With malice or not, aren't there friends/kids at your school who will know where you're going, they'll talk to each other, and word will eventually spread to a student who's going to be working at your old bank, and he'll tell old bank who your new bank is? Or, I don't know, maybe you go to a small school where there's not a lot of kids going into finance.
