Reputation of Japanese Investment Banks in EMEA

How do the Japanese banks like Mizuho, MUFG, Nomura and Daiwa fit in wider Europe and specifically London? What is their niche or what is each bank stronger in?

EMEA is probably the most competitive region. Firms are willing to do business with lesser known banks if they can provide good services at the cheapest price.

For project finance/infrastructure finance, Japanese banks are probably really good because they have a large balance sheet. I can't comment on anything else, but will say that if you do a year at a Japanese bank and don't like it, I see no reason why you won't be able to lateral into a different bank with ease.
