In my experience, a research editor is just like any other copy/proof editor, working to catch mistakes before publication, though specific duties depend on the house. He could fix content, fix spelling/grammar, desktop publish, work with printers, possibly fact-checking, and so on. Couldn't tell you how salaries compare. They like to keep that info secret...
