SA Do's and Don'tS

Aside from the obvious, doing your work well and not blacking out at HR events, what are some more niche tips for summer analysts? What memorable things have they done that made your life easier?

Thanks.

try to learn as much of the ms office as possible. will help you work much faster

try to ask questions that are good / show interest in what youre doing. be mindful of when someone is or is not available to answer them.

show that you have the capacity to work hard and understand when that is necessary, but do not be weird and/or be in the office super late for no reason.

try to be genuine when speaking to other people in the firm. being super transactional during networking events is a red flag.

play politics.

get the staffer to like u. Be friends with the other interns. Understand who matters in the team and who doesn't. Suck the MDs (figuratively) who matter off ie. go on coffees with them, ask them if they need any help.

Don't really do this... It is really transparent who is playing politics, and it's not a great look. Just be genuine in your work, your attitude to learn, and importantly, the connections you make. If you very obviously ignore the junior cohort and only grab coffees with seniors and only do their work and not the work juniors ask you to do... You're not getting a return offer.

"You cannot opt out of the game of power; even if you try to ignore it, you are part of it.”

I didn't say don't do junior work or go on coffees with them. But when it comes to the final decision some people have more say than others. The word of the top AN2 matters more than the crappy AN2.

Be genuine and hungry and whatever thats table stakes I don't think that needs to be said, but you really need a sponsor or a couple people really rooting for you as opposed to everyone saying "eh that guy is decent and nice"
