Summer Internship dress code | IBD London

Hello Monkeys,

Wanted to ask you about dress code among interns/analyst at London's BBs and EBs. Is it more relaxed when compared to American offices (which are covered by most of the similar topics)?

Few things that are on my mind:

  • Suit: Is wearing a suit every day required, or are suit pants and shirt enough? If suit is required, does want need to wear a tie?

  • Shoes: What type of shoes should be okay? I know that Oxfords are acceptable, how about double strap monk shoes and penny loafers? Are brown shoes truly a no-go?

  • Fridays: Are jeans allowed on casual Fridays or under no circumstances should one consider putting them on?

  • Weekends: What would you wear for a weekend work at the office?

  • Facial hair: Is well-groomed facial hair acceptable among junior employees?

Lastly, how many sets (suits/suit pants and shirts, shoes) would you recommend buying before the internship?

Thank you for helping me to avoid rookie mistakes!

Suit: Suit with no tie every day, hang jacket up on chair and shirt for the day after that, maybe will put it on for a meeting/coffee with a senior etc. Keep a tie in the desk.

Shoes: Stick with Oxfords and black penny loafers - Dont wear monks or brown.

Fridays: Depends on the team - play it safe for the first 1/2 weeks with chinos or suit pants and see what others are wearing

Weekends: Whatever you like - jeans/t-shirt/casual/gym clothing etc

Facial hair: Sure cant imagine why not as long as its neat

Lastly, how many sets (suits/suit pants and shirts, shoes): 7-10 shirts, 2-3 suits, 1 pair of shoes

Usually you come in with suit no tie (would recommend wearing a tie for the first day though) and you leave your jacket at your desk for most of the day anyways.

In london would advise against loafers and monk straps - usually no one until associate level wears loafers in the office.

Fridays - show up in a suit the first friday and adapt from there. My team was still mostly dressed up with 1-2 people coming in chinos.

Weekend - anything presentable imo, so jeans/chinos and like white teeshirt no graphics or casual shirt should do the job.

Beard - plenty of people rock one, make sure it’s well trimmed and dense if it’s not just get rid of it.

Had like 8 shirts, 2 suits, one blazer and one pair of black shoes.
