Tech Consulting to IB - at M7?

Hi All,

I study at a well-known M7 MBA program. My background has primarily been in Technology Consulting in the Energy Sector for a Big 4 Firm. I have been looking into (and going into) all the IB info sessions for BBs/Boutiques/MMs

1. Is a switch from pre-MBA Tech Consulting to IB possible? Have you seen it happen at M7 MBA programs?

2. Unlike others pursuing IB who come from Finance-adjacent backgrounds, I am struggling to exactly connect my background with Finance, since it's a relatively recent interest. Is it okay to go to banks and tell it's a relatively recent career decision to try for IB? I don't want to pretend that I have been interested for the last 5 years in IB because that's clearly not the case.

I would like to hear your thoughts.

1) I can't speak for M7 because I was top 10. I can say though that you can definitely do the switch from your background to IB. Heck, I have seen jewelery realtors making it why not you? You have worked in consulting and many ex consultants find an IB job

2) I would work with your career consultant to try to make up a good why banking story. Every MBA candidate applying for IB in the last 30+ years had to come up with one. You dont have the weirdest background. There have been teachers, musicians and pro soccer players that had to come up with a story. Be a good salesman of yourself and find one.

Hope the above helps.
