What actually happens if you don't pay your sign on bonus back?

Basically, I want to know if/how people have avoided paying bonuses back if they left before their clawback date.

Don't want to go into too many details, but the short version of the story is I am a stub ASO w/ a potential job opportunity in the works. My current sign-on bonus has a clawback date that I believe I would be unable to reach if I took the new job.

If it matters, new job wouldn't be in finance - not planning on coming back either.

Anything info helps.
