What's recruiting with a 1 year Msc like? (e.g. LSE MSc Finance)
Hey guys! I'm trying to understand what recruiting in a 1-year program would be like.
2-year programs give you the opportunity for spring weeks and SA, with the chance of receiving a full time offer for the next year. In a 1 year (9 months) program I imagine students just recruit for full-time or off-cycles? I'm a bit confused.
In a 1-year MSc program, like the LSE MSc Finance, the recruiting process is indeed different compared to 2-year programs. Based on the most helpful WSO content:
Full-Time Recruiting: If you're in a 1-year program, it typically makes more sense to focus on full-time analyst recruiting. This is because the timeline for summer internships (SA) doesn't align well with the short duration of your program. Most banks and firms expect penultimate-year students for SA roles, which can be tricky to navigate in a 1-year MSc.
Off-Cycle Internships: Off-cycle internships are a great option for 1-year MSc students. These internships often occur during the school year and can provide valuable front-office finance experience. They also help you build your resume and increase your competitiveness for full-time roles.
Networking: Networking becomes even more critical in a 1-year program. Since you have less time to establish connections, you need to start early and be proactive in reaching out to alumni, attending events, and leveraging your school's career services.
Unpaid Internships: If you feel you lack relevant experience, you might consider unpaid or part-time internships during the school year. These can help you gain exposure to the industry without making you ineligible for full-time positions.
Smaller Banks: Smaller banks or firms might be more flexible with their recruiting timelines and could be open to considering MSc students for SA roles, especially if you network effectively and bypass traditional HR processes.
In summary, for a 1-year MSc program, the focus is generally on full-time roles or off-cycle internships, with networking and strategic planning being key to success.
