1st Year Summer internships

Hi,

I'm a 1st year undergraduate student and looking to break into IB. The problem is that I may not get any spring weeks this year so I'm looking for opportunities in the summer.

In particular, I've been looking into getting experience / internships at smaller / boutique firms. From what I've heard, I've seen people talk about cold-calling / email / LinkedIn messaging to set these opportunities up but I'm still not totally sure about how to go about this. Is this the best approach?

If anyone has experience in getting summer internships not through typical "structured" programs, I'd love to hear how you went about it.
