Asset manager / IB experience -----> Breaking into HF/ Analyst?
Hello all- Rosati here
Love the forum and all the support
Background:
I spent 5 yrs at a small investment banking firm on wall st
There I invested my clients into PIPEs,PP's, etc and learned a lot about the process.
I am now at a fixed income broker dealer and have family high up at a notable hedge fund.
I wish to find my own way into the business and learn as much as I can along the way. (No handouts in my family)
I would even consider an internship at this point just to start out and get a feel for things. (Will have to get cooking soon as its the season) Where to look ? I remember seeing an internship part of this site.
Problem: I do not yet have a degree.(Taking courses at night/.summer) I chose pitching stock over college hoping it would pay off but so far it is debatable and I am paying the price for not having the degree because this is the field I want to be in.
When I see that people are stressing which MBA to complete just to get an analyst position, I cringe.
I believe I am a different breed . A hustler w/ more determination than the average with a good head on my shoulders.
The family member I mentioned is an ops manager and told me its going to be hard for me to get an entry level pos. w/o a degree even at his fund
I got my first taste of his thinking when he said he wanted me to call a friend of his to see if he had any openings- The guy laughed at me for the lack of a degree. That was his way of saying no favors are going to be handed out I suppose.
What would you do if you were me? I intend on using my linkedin network, finishing my degree, working at my firm in the interim and charming my way into an internship and then an entry level position as say analyst and will keep going and going if it fails
Thanks for reading
Any thoughts and advice and criticism is appreciated
The days where a degree wasn't necessary for woking in this industry are long over, only place I can think of is Switzerland where kids finish at 16 and join apprenticeships with the BBs (CS and UBS).
Not trying to be a dick, rather I'm legitimately curious - how was pitching a stock mutually exclusive of college? What does that mean exactly?
By all means feel free to be a dick- I was young and naive and put off college just because my stocks were doing well. I was 21 and I regret my actions and have to deal w the consequences.
5 years later I'm trying to sew up a degree but my job is flexible and I can go to school.
Do you think that wall st experience/IB exposure/internship + attending classes + taking FM courses will give me even a slim chance of getting in (with a referral)??
Obviously it's not a yes or no question but your input is appreciated.
A good head on my shoulders means I will do whatever it takes to land a position. (Cold call managers/partners/pms, attend networking meetings and seminars)
Sorry but I honestly don't see how you'll land an analyst position without a degree.
Even with the degree it will be very hard.
Have you asked your family member if an ops position/internship was available? Definitely not the easiest way to become an analyst but it has happened before...
Gotcha. Thank you
No. I have not.
I'm having a sit down w him this week and will ask
Talk to the family member about what it would take to get the job, find out the whole story first. Yes the days of walking in off the street and ending up CEO al la Sidney Weinberg are largely over, but not completely so. See what it will take to get the job, work on the degree, and keep up the attitude that they're hiring the person+experience much more than the degree....
