Aussie Internships

Recently started uni at a go8 and I was wondering what the next 3 years should look like for me if I am aiming for a role in finance. There’s a lot about recruiting and networking in the US here but a lot less for Aus. Just want to piece together what I should be focusing on. I know first year I won’t really go for any internships but how should I go about finding a role after that and so on.

Most Helpful

1) Get a sub exec position at FMAA/UNIT -> try get some leadership role as IBs love hiring people that were active in uni societies

2) Start building up your relevant work experience (eg a Finance internship, cold email local M&A boutiques/investment managers asking for a coffee chat or internship). Some uni's help with landing internships and co-ops. Ideally you want 2+ relevant work experiences when applying for IB summers

3) Make sure grades are high at uni, one less thing to stress about when applying for roles

4) If you're keen to do an exchange look into doing it in second year (if 4 year degree) since it will affect your availability for interviews/internships in penultimate

5) Do case competitions in societies & look for student-ran investment fundsA bit of effort over the next few years across societies, landing a few internships, and having a good GPA will position you really well for summer applications in a few years. I'd also recommend looking on LinkedIn for people from your Uni currently working in IB etc and seeing what they did while they were at Uni.

Appreciate the reply! Really hard to find specific information like this around. Just a couple of questions. Is studying economics instead of finance looked at unfavourably compared to straight finance? And does it matter where I do internships? Because I am from a US city with an active finance community and have some connections that I could possibly leverage to get an internship.
