Can I enter the buy-side with less than a year of IB?

What are some good buy-side Analyst roles in London that I can apply to if I have less than a year of BB IB experience? Primarily looking for entry-level Analyst positions (ie those that hire undergrad students or people with less than a year of post-grad FT work experience).

My background:

- European target undergrad + master

- Less than 6 months of FT M&A experience at an extremely sweaty group

- 2 MF/UMM PE internships (at firms that don’t convert)

The training component is critical (considering that I’m still a junior), but other than that I’m open to anything really

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and suggestions for your situation:

Entering the Buy-Side with Less Than a Year of IB Experience

  1. Feasibility:

    • It is possible to enter the buy-side with less than a year of IB experience. Many buy-side firms, especially in London, value the skills and experience gained during internships and short stints in investment banking.
  2. Good Buy-Side Analyst Roles in London:

    • Private Equity (PE) Analyst: Given your background with MF/UMM PE internships, you might find opportunities in smaller PE firms or those looking for junior analysts.
    • Hedge Fund Analyst: Some hedge funds are open to hiring candidates with strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of financial markets.
    • Venture Capital (VC) Analyst: VC firms often look for candidates with a keen interest in startups and innovation, and your M&A experience could be valuable here.
    • Asset Management Analyst: Firms in asset management may also be open to hiring candidates with less than a year of IB experience, especially if you have strong quantitative skills.

Key Considerations for Your Application

  1. Training Component:

    • Since you emphasized the importance of training, look for firms that offer structured training programs for new analysts. This is often highlighted in job descriptions or during the interview process.
  2. Networking:

    • Leverage your network from your European target undergrad and master programs, as well as your previous internships. Personal recommendations can significantly boost your chances.
  3. Tailoring Your Application:

    • Highlight your M&A experience and PE internships prominently in your resume and cover letter. Emphasize your analytical skills, deal experience, and any relevant coursework or certifications.

Additional Tips

  • Research: Conduct thorough research on firms that have a history of hiring junior analysts with less than a year of experience. Look for firms that value potential and are willing to invest in training.
  • Flexibility: Be open to various roles within the buy-side, as gaining initial experience can open doors to more specialized positions later on.

By focusing on these areas, you can enhance your chances of securing a buy-side analyst role in London despite having less than a year of IB experience.
