Considering transferring to increase chances to break into IB

I’m a second semester freshman with a 3.83 gpa at a non-target school. Most of the stuff I see/read says that if you’re not at a target/semi-target school you’re basically screwed if you want to get into IB. Is it worth considering transferring to a semi-target/target school as I would be a second semester sophomore at the time of transferring if I was to transfer (think NYU, UMich, UT Austin, UChicago and Villanova if that’s considered a semi-target). I know networking is a huge part of it but I feel as if I was to be at a semi-target/target school my chances would be much better.

It's definitely worth at least sending out a few applications considering your gpa is in range to be competitive (I'm assuming you have decent ECs). I would expand your list to include some other transfer friendly schools like UNC, UVA, and USC.

I am applying to UVA as well, forgot to include it. As far as ECs go I am in an investment banking club and trading and investment club at my school. I am doing a finance internship right now and have an Audit internship over the summer which I feel is a waste since I want to go into investment banking but I figured any experience is better than none. I am also in the process of finishing the Wall Street Prep premium financial modeling course.

Those seem kind of weak to me unfortunately, but I still think you would have a shot at Umich level schools. Maybe try to grab a leadership position at one of the clubs before apps are due. Your high school gpa is going to be really limiting as a sophomore transfer as well. It's also worth noting that Columbia's acceptance rate is inflated by the 3-2 program. It's still transfer friendly but the real acceptance rate is sub 10% IIRC. It seems like finances aren't a factor for you so you could apply to need aware schools like WashU or Emory without asking for finaid.

Columbia is acc relatively transfer friendly compared to schools of similar prestige
