Didn't Convert Spring (UK)

I did a spring week in M&A at a low/mid-tier BB this past spring, but unfortunately I didn't convert it. The feedback they gave me was all positive, so it seems like a case of 'you were ok, but not good enough', I suppose. Undoubtedly, if I get any interviews for SA 2024, I'll be asked why I'm no longer going with this BB / why I didn't convert my spring.

What's the best way to tackle that in an interview question? Thanks guys!

I didn’t convert any of my spring weeks and all the firms I did a spring week at, all invited me for an interview for their summer internship. Don’t sweat it. I was also never asked too why I didn’t convert it but have a spin on it and a story on why you didn’t, what you learned from the experience, etc. and you’ll be good.

Thanks really appreciated - in a similar boat. What would be the best way to explain not converting if they did ask? And did you list them on your CV - I did 3 and didn't convert but have heard people say it looks bad not converting that many. Also did you talk about your springs at all in CLs or interview answers, for example talking about them in a why IB answer? I feel they'd be good reasons but not sure its wise to draw attention to them

For me, I was honest and said I simply wasn’t ready in terms of knowing about the roles on offer (S&T, ER and IB) and being able to communicate my interest/passion. So I would say I went away to network to find out more about each role (and name drop here if appropriate) and that I worked on my communication skills by doing xyz. Then talk about how I know I’m now ready by some sort of experience/evidence, whether that was a society role or running a careers presentation. Basically your classical STAR response and turning what could look negative into something positive.

For your next point, I would definitely most talk about your experience in the spring weeks, what you did and learned and if you achieved anything, such as winning a trading simulation or a new concept that you found exciting.

I would also advise that you take this time to do some self-reflection and think why you may not have converted but your peers did. Key to making sure you come back stronger and prepared for the summer internship process.

Wait, if you don't convert springs for their 2024 summers, can you stills apply AGAIN for their 2024 summers??? Or are you no longer being considered for that year

Yeah it was. Unsure of conversion rate but I only know a few who have actually gotten offers so far
