Do you take recruiting calls / meetings when happy in your current seat?
Been an analyst for 2 years after PE / IB stints. Pretty happy in my current seat, but curious if I should be taking meetings with MMs / other recruiters when they reach out, or if it's a waste of time. In other words, if I get fired, can I just reach out to all these recruiters at that point, or is it important to start building this relationship now even when I'm not looking to move?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's generally a good idea to take meetings with recruiters, even if you're currently satisfied in your position. Here's why:
Networking: Building relationships now can be beneficial in the long run. If you ever decide to move or if an unexpected situation arises, such as being let go, you'll have a network to tap into immediately.
Market Awareness: Keeping in touch with recruiters can provide you with valuable information about market trends, compensation benchmarks, and new opportunities that could be interesting for your career growth.
Opportunity Evaluation: You never know when an opportunity might be significantly better than your current role. Taking meetings allows you to evaluate options periodically and ensures you're not missing out on potential career advancements.
Reciprocity: If you're in a good position, you might be able to help a recruiter with leads or referrals, which can strengthen your relationship with them.
Preparedness: If the worst happens and you are let go, having an established relationship with recruiters can expedite your job search process.
Remember, it's not just about looking for a new job; it's about staying informed and connected. It's a strategic career move rather than a waste of time.

For these recruiter calls, it’s more important to have strong, relevant experience than having a relation with the recruiter. The way I’d approach this is:
- are you already familiar with the type of opportunity? Or could you benefit from learning more about the firm or position. It’s not a waste of time if it’s new and relevant information
- is it a reputable recruiter? The main concern in taking these calls would be it going back to your current employer. As long as you make it clear that you are not actively recruiting and your speaking with a good recruiter, then it will be less of a concern
In general, would just wait until you are a stronger candidate for the role and interested in moving in the near future.
