English speaking IB internship in Frankfurt?

Basically, one of my friends has done an internship in a small MM boutique in Frankfurt and he didn't need to speak German.

I was wondering what's the real situation with other firms in Frankfurt (bulge brackets, elite boutiques, BIG 4, etc.). Can someone confirm?

Do you need to speak some sort of German? German is not needed only during the internships? No German is necessary until associate level?
