From the outback to The Street
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to make this post, so I apologise in advance if I am mistaken in creating this thread here.
My question concerns myself as an Australian who is a first-year undergraduate. I have lived in Australia my entire life, as have my family. I have no connections in banking at all and I have no family members who work in any other related industry. I am studying at more-or-less the best university in this country (it is hard to tell, especially with Commerce degrees: depending on who you speak to, there are 2, potentially 3, that are equal first), am doing a Bachelor of Commerce and I will be majoring in Accounting and Finance.
It is with this situation in mind that I'd like to ask my question. At the moment I believe that I have done about as best as I could have considering what was available to me. However, my goal is to make it to Wall Street, which I know is difficult even for those who are better placed to achieve this. While getting to where I am now required some clearly defined objectives (only graduating high school with a certain grade), I have no knowledge to go on for making it to a top-tier firm. So, generally and specifically, I'm asking what I should do (considering I have two-and-a-half years remaining at university) to achieve this goal.
The only idea I have had would be to try and get employed in Australia by a local branch of a firm that is top-tier in America (JPM, GS, MS and others all have small setups here), work locally for a few years and try to transfer within the firm, if that is at all possible.
Any advice would be tremendously helpful and it would be greatly appreciated.

Get a high GPA, show an interest in the market, network your ass off, learn about the different market areas of the world. Not all banking jobs are in NYC, in fact only a minority of industry jobs are in NYC. Do research on firms, start making contacts at these frims. See what the outback offers in terms of IBD, you never know you might find a job you love right there.
