Has anyone experienced tried moving (back) from the UK to US?

Hi, Has anyone successfully made the move to New York after being in the UK for several years (by switching jobs not internal transfers). I'm American born and bred, and spent the first 6 years of my career in New York. I'm taking a new role in the UK for some international exposure and thought it would be a good thing to add to the resume. I want to start my family (kids) and want them to be raised in the US so I want to move back before I can do that. I know at the mid/mid-senior levels there are just fewer spots - is it going to be near impossible for me to get back to the homeland? (Yes I should have thought this through beforehand I agree...)
