How early did you start networking for PE recruiting?

So I’m already thinking of recruiting for PE further down the line, hence my latest posts.

How early did you start networking for PE? I’m not planning to apply for another 3 years or so, but I do want to build a genuine network with people from firms I am most interested in to see how it might evolve further. Is it okay to do so? How to maintain the relationship through years without necessarily being active applicant? Are those people even interested in just keeping in touch with you and you update them on your professional progression etc.?
