How much does an MSc improve recruitment odds?
I screwed around in sixth form and found myself in an ex-poly studying engineering (obviously non-target, negative target even) so the chances of breaking in as it stands are nil. However, I’m in my final year and was recently admitted to a pretty competitive MSc programme at Imperial in the EEE department on a full ride. I was wondering if that moves the needle whatsoever? My feeling is that since it’s not finance related and my undergrad being stinky as it is, the odds are pretty much still nil.
No matter what, I’m doing the masters since it’s a great programme engineering wise, I’m just curious
An MSc from a prestigious institution like Imperial College London, even in a non-finance field like Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), can significantly improve your recruitment odds, especially if you leverage the brand name and networking opportunities effectively. Here's why and how:
1. Prestige and Brand Recognition
2. Transferable Skills
3. Networking Opportunities
4. Overcoming Non-Target Undergrad
5. Strategic Positioning
6. Targeting Specific Roles
7. Internships and Experience
Final Thoughts:
Your odds are not "nil"—far from it. The MSc at Imperial is a golden opportunity to pivot your career. However, the onus is on you to actively bridge the gap between engineering and finance through networking, skill-building, and targeted applications. With the right strategy, you can absolutely move the needle.
