How to find our what you enjoy?

I want to find an area in finance or technology that is right for me and my skillset. I think I have a rough idea, but I want to confirm my suspicions with an internship.

Problem is, recruiting (I am based in the UK) is ridiculously competitive to the point where everyone applies to everything. As there are so many qualified applicants, people take, if anything, what they are given. In this sense it is super hard to use an internship as a confirmation of interest, as it is so difficult to get one.

How best can I find what it’s like actually working in these areas?

I have emailed 100s of small businesses, but finding one that takes on a) Interns and b) Aligns with academic status (time of year and graduation date) has resulted in basically no returns.
