How to Get Into a Boutique?

I hear that someone from a well known non-target can make it to a small boutique all the time on this website, but one thing I don't understand is how to actually do it. I don't see too many IB Analyst positions at boutiques, but those that do often have over 150 applicants, at which point your chances become similar to a BB (as far as I know, since the acceptance rate becomes <1%). I understand that NYC has a ton of boutique shops, so how can I go about getting a position?

How can I find boutiques in the NYC area? I want to be in NYC because that is where most of the good opportunities are, but I can't find a list. One way I have been trying to find boutiques to intern at is through linkedin, where I find one boutique, and end up finding a few more in the "similar companies" tab. Also, thank you so much for the amazing information. I have noted it down and will definitely refer to it in the future.
