I got “terminated” from my internship….what next?

Hi All,
This is a relatively long post since I’ll be trying to give as much context as possible but i’d like to get everyones opinions and advice on my next moves.

For some context:
- I go to a Russel Group University in the UK and for my course I had the option of doing a placement year (1 year in industry between 2nd and final year of studies)
- I had a lot of family issues (3 family members passed away) in the past 18 months and I was not motivated at all to apply for anything
- ended up applying for a Finance (Essentially FP&A) placement at a fortune 100 company that is unrelated to finance and getting it

I knew something was up as I initially applied for a role in Manchester and throughout the whole process (TI, AC, Etc) I was reassured that it will be in Manchester yet the day after the AC I got the offer and they said that both placement students will be placed in another city for this year. (Essentially a Village with nothing around me and nobody I knew).
I accepted the offer anyways as I thought I could suck it up for a year and get some good experience.

My first month was my “handover” month where the two previous placement students would teach myself and the other current student the ropes. I was in a sh*t position as for my team, the placement student was based in Manchester, meaning I pretty much had to do the training online. No fault to him as he was really friendly and nice to talk to, but he was on a 1 week holiday the first week. The second week he came down to train me in person, then the last two weeks he trained me online. However, he had to still do his work whilst training me and a lot of what I was given after he had never done, meaning I had no notes or training to go off.

Keep in mind that whilst this was happening I was coming in at 8:30 and leaving at 4:30 as that was what he was doing and what I was informed to do.

After this month goes by, I start to get considerably more work and my manager tells me that “You need to be able to do my tasks quicker so that I can give you my tasks and go home earlier”. She also states that I am her intern and that she will assist me if I need help or get anything wrong.

After the first month, I was on my own and essentially made complete new notes on everything new and old that was given to me, as I had old/incomplete or no notes at all for tasks.

Whilst I am doing my tasks I start to struggle with some and ask my manager for help, which she willingly helps me with. However she also suggests that I make some improvements where I can for some tasks.
I ended up creating three process improvements for my daily tasks and this saved a significant amount of time for me.

The next month I am told that I will have daily meetings with my manager in the morning and that I am “rushing with my tasks” even though I previously was told to do them quicker. Whilst I admit I had made the occasional mistake, I was still rectifying these issues and ensured that all tasks were completed to a high standard of quality at the end. (I had around 35 tasks per month).

I am then told that I have been leaving 15 minutes earlier each day and I should be leaving at 4:45, which I gladly comply with after I have been notified. The next day I went on a one week vacation as I had not taken any vacation days prior to starting 4 months ago. When I come back, I am then told that I will be in a meeting with my manager, her manager, and HR to discuss whether to extend my probation, keep it the same, or terminate my contract the next day.
I found this odd however when the meeting came up, my manager was not present and it was me, her manager, and HR.

She had created a list on excel of all of the tasks or things I had done wrong or mistakes I made and I was told that “in the interest of the team” I was being terminated as they didnt have time to cater to an intern.

I am now on a gap year and starting my final year next academic intake (Sept 2024).

I am stumped on what to do this year and Idk if I am in the right or wrong.

Also in applications, do I include this experience?

Judging from the fact that you can't even spell "Russell Group" correctly, begs my mind to think how many errors you could make in creating a document.

This sounds like a shit internship and you also sound like a difficult intern to work with. Match made in heaven, if I’m honest.

Don’t stress it. It doesn’t sound like they’ve treated you impeccably, but for your next role, realise that you’re basically there to eat shit with a smile. Stop trying to rationalise the decisions and treatment from everyone else. Do what they want, when they want, how they want. That’s all.
