Invited to Invite Only Networking Dinner with EB

I got invited to an invite only networking dinner with an EB for students at my University.

I already applied to this EB and have yet to hear but am wondering if I can mesh well with a banker or bankers who report back to HR, would that lead to me getting a first round interview with this firm?

To answer your question: Sometimes.

Sometimes, there might be HR reps there at the event to talk to. 1R's tend to work better when there are HR reps from the firm sitting next to you during the dinner. I assume this is an actual dinner and not just a drinks networking event in the EB office, right?

Just to clarify: this event is purely for your university so I assume they're coming to your campus for the dinner if I'm correct?

Yes, so the best strategy is to take names of everyone who's attended from the firm as it will be useful for 1R interviews. Then, speak to a member of HR at least to introduce yourself so they remember you better as they are most likely to review your application. Don't try to talk too much about application processes because they'll just hate those questions. Spend the remainder of the session talking to senior bankers and asking them about their work / background etc. Circle back to HR to thank them for organising the session and then feel free to follow up with them on LinkedIn to thank them for their day.

I did that with a BB and somehow a few days later, I got a 1R. I emphasise strongly: somehow. Not sure if it was linked but I made sure to be complimentary and conversational during the event.
