Is the rush over?
Monkeys,
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Preface:
My tenure on WSO can mostly be defined by poor attempts at jokes. However, if I ever felt I could truly help someone in need, I would send the poster a PM. I have also learned so much about the industry from everyone on this forum and I have definitely busted out laughing at my desk plenty of times, and for that I thank you.
Background:
Undergraduate degree in finance (non-target)
Trading operations at a large bank (3 years)
Treasury Finance at the same large bank (2 years)
Part-time MBA while working in the treasury department (2 years)
Investment banking at a middle market firm (1 year in)
Problem:
I think investment banking is great, I am just worried that it may not be something I will ever be "great" at. For instance, I do not care to spend hours reading a credit agreement nor do I care to analyze a company's terribly put together projected financials. I no longer want to be in my bosses shoes and I have a new appreciation for my personal non-career related goals.
I have never considered myself intelligent. I would say my work ethic and ability to connect with people lead to landing an investment banking job. However, I am worried that I never truly understood what the job entailed and that I was more caught up in scoring an offer. That being said, the rush of interviewing and networking was incredible. I am worried that the rush is now gone for me. I love being involved in the pitch process but I dread the work that will come along with the execution if we win the engagement.
I have taken plenty of personality tests / career track tests in graduate school but I am pretty sure I was always able to rig the system to spit out investment banking, Asset Management, private equity, etc.
Based on my networking experience and actually enjoying interviews, I figured sales (not S&T) might be a good career area to pursue. I understand that is a very broad term but I wanted to ask everyone for their opinion. Also, any information on how to break in without any sales experience would be very helpful. Any target industries? Any great companies?
Thank you in advance!

With an IB background and MBA, sales jobs should be pretty easy to get. Most sales jobs just want people they can connect with. They don't take a whole lot of skill, just need to be a very personable individual. And unlike IB, I don't think there's no HYP preference and prestige is not that big of a thing. Also, the product you will be selling can be extremely different, whereas in IB it all just boils down to the numbers on the IS or BS and CFs no matter the industry or company size. Have you looked into local companies around you just to get a start?
