LinkedIn networking

I need help on how to approach networking on LinkedIn and setting up networking calls. What are some things to do and not to do? I want to do investment banking and I have seen how important it is to network with people that already work at the bank you are targeting. I have not had much success with this so if anyone has advice I would appreciate it.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips on how to approach networking on LinkedIn and setting up networking calls:

  1. Identify the right people: Look for alumni or people with similar backgrounds and interests. They are more likely to respond positively to your networking attempts.

  2. Initial Contact: Send a standard format networking email. You can find many examples of these online. Make sure to personalize it to show that you've done your research about the person you're reaching out to.

  3. Follow Up: After the initial meeting, it's important to follow up and build a genuine relationship. Instead of just calling once or twice a month, try to get to know them as people.

  4. Stay Professional: Keep the conversations professional. This doesn't mean only talk about finance and banking, but the non-work talk should be about hobbies and interests, not your personal life.

  5. Share Relevant Content: Send them emails with random articles they might be interested in. This shows that you're thoughtful and invested in the relationship.

  6. Be Genuine: It's nearly impossible to network effectively if you can't communicate your story, your reasoning for wanting to go into investment banking, and your experiences in a compelling manner.

Remember, networking is not just about getting a job, it's about building relationships. So, be genuine, be interested, and be consistent. Good luck!
