No IB intern this summer

I’m in penultimate year in one of the top schools in uk. I missed the good timing last year to apply for summer internship 2024 but it’s already my penultimate year and I don’t want to do masters. What should I do now? I felt so anxious and lost as all people around me got some good jobs. I don’t even exactly know what I want to do in the future. Are there any other ways to find summer internships this year given it’s already April?😭

Too late for SA 2024. Note that some banks accept applications from final year students for their summer intakes so you should try SA25

Navigating the competitive landscape of summer internships, especially in investment banking (IB), can indeed be daunting, particularly when you feel like you've missed the prime application window. However, all hope is not lost. Here are some actionable steps you can take to enhance your chances of securing a summer internship, even at this stage:

  1. Leverage Networking: Start by reaching out to alumni from your university who are currently working in the finance industry. LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for this. Express your interest in investment banking and ask for advice or if they know of any opportunities. Remember, networking is not just about asking for a job but building relationships that can open doors.

  2. Utilize School Resources: Your university's career services can be a goldmine of resources. They often have connections with employers and might be aware of late openings or firms that are still seeking interns. Attend any career fairs or finance-related events to make direct connections.

  3. Explore Boutique Firms: While bulge bracket banks might have closed their applications, boutique firms often have more flexible hiring timelines. Research and apply to these firms, as they can offer valuable experience and a foot in the door of the investment banking world.

  4. Consider Related Fields: If direct IB internships are scarce, look for internships in related fields such as asset management, private equity, or financial consulting. Experience in these areas can still be very relevant and enhance your CV for future IB applications.

  5. WSO Resources: The Wall Street Oasis (WSO) platform offers a wealth of resources, including the WSO Company Database and networking guides. Utilize these to research firms, prepare for interviews, and connect with professionals in the industry.

  6. Stay Prepared: Continue to refine your CV, cover letter, and interview skills. The WSO Interview Prep Courses can be particularly helpful in this regard, offering insights into what firms are looking for and how to present yourself effectively.

  7. Consider Internships Abroad: If opportunities in the UK are limited, consider looking for internships in other financial hubs such as New York, Hong Kong, or Singapore. This can also add an international dimension to your CV.

  8. Stay Positive and Persistent: The process can be challenging, but maintaining a positive attitude and being persistent in your efforts can make a significant difference. Keep applying, networking, and exploring all possible avenues.

Remember, every experience you gain is a step forward in your career path. Even if you don't land an IB internship this summer, gaining relevant experience in finance or business can still be incredibly valuable. Keep exploring, learning, and building your network.
