Secondaries pe vs mm ib
I've been lucky to get two full time positions, one at secondaries pe and one in mm ib (HW/WB/Baird) and was just wondering which would be better to take in terms of long term potential for exits, comp etc. Any help would be much appreciated.
Take MM IB, exit opps from secondaries are severely limited to other secondaries shops and the modelling experience gained is not as well respected as that from a IB role.
A no brainer imo
Even if the secondaries pe is UMM level as I know its hard to break into UMM from MM ib?
It’s very hard to lateral from secondaries to direct roles although it could be done, if you want to stay in secondaries as a career then take that role but for purely exit opps I still think the MM IB role is better.
Thanks, do you know what long term comp would look like in secondaries pe as starting is the same as ib
My firms secondaries Analysts are on 70k + 40-50%, associates on 90k + 50%, don’t have many figures beyond that level unfortunately
I would take the secondaries offer hands down.
Bear in mind that we’re in a US-centric forum where (i) people join the buy-side already thinking about exits due to the 2 and out system (while in the UK you could just stay at the firm as long as you wish); (ii) the MM firms you mention are strong in the US but relatively weak in EMEA
To add to this, secondaries is a booming place where competition is getting fierce and you’re seeing a lot of people from top BB trying to land roles there (i.e will make it difficult for you to go there after your MM stint)
