Seeking Guidance on Choosing Career Path in Finance – Asset Management, Sales and Trading, or Corporate Finance?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently at a crossroads in my career journey and would greatly appreciate your insights. I’m torn between pursuing a career in asset management, sales and trading (with concerns related to AI impact on traders), and corporate finance (although it’s not my top preference compared to market finance and asset management). (I am passionate about trading (prop trading))

My primary goal is to maximize my earning potential, and I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the current landscape of these fields, especially considering the influence of AI on trading roles. Any advice or experiences you can share would be immensely helpful in guiding my decision.

Thanks in advance for your input!

You gave the answer yourself, your main interest is in S&T, mainly trading. You most likely won't land a prop trading role right out of college but you might land a role some years down the road. And honestly, nobody has the forsight to tell you the exact impact of AI on the industry and I don't know if S&T will be impacted most. GPT-4 can already create quite decent slides, so maybe IBD will be hit most (making the repetitive tasks at the junior level redundant). FICC trading might even be safest from major disruption due to relative complexity compared to let's say IBD or equities trading. In the end, you have to accept that level of uncertainty.

Hey there!

Choosing a career path in finance is indeed a big decision, and it's great that you're considering your options carefully. Let's break down the three areas you're interested in:

  1. Asset Management (AM):

    • Career Path: In AM, you can expect to start in roles such as equity and credit research or as an analyst supporting portfolio managers. Over time, you can work your way up to a portfolio manager position.
    • Earning Potential: AM can be quite lucrative, especially if you're managing large funds or working in roles that support investment managers, like wholesaling or product support.
    • AI Impact: While AI is increasingly used for quantitative analysis and automated trading, there's still a significant need for human judgment in AM, particularly in client relationship management and complex investment decision-making.
  2. Sales and Trading (S&T):

    • Career Path: Starting as a trader or in a sales role, you can progress to more senior positions, but the path can be volatile due to market conditions.
    • Earning Potential: S&T can offer high earnings, especially in roles tied to performance. Prop trading, which you mentioned you're passionate about, can be particularly rewarding.
    • AI Impact: AI is having a notable impact on trading by automating certain tasks. However, there's still a place for human traders, especially in complex trades that require nuanced understanding and in proprietary trading where innovative strategies can be developed.
  3. Corporate Finance:

    • Career Path: Roles in corporate finance can vary widely, from financial analysis to treasury and strategic planning.
    • Earning Potential: While corporate finance roles may not offer the same earning potential as AM or S&T initially, they can provide a stable income and opportunities for growth into executive positions.
    • AI Impact: AI tools are used for data analysis and forecasting, but strategic decision-making and financial leadership still rely heavily on human expertise.

Given your passion for trading and your goal to maximize earning potential, you might find the dynamic and performance-driven environment of S&T, particularly prop trading, to be a good fit. However, keep in mind that AI's impact on trading roles is significant, and staying ahead will require continuous learning and adaptation.

Asset management could also be a strong contender, especially if you're interested in a career that combines analysis with relationship management and has a bit more stability than S&T.

Ultimately, consider where your strengths and interests lie, and perhaps seek out internships or informational interviews in each area to get a better sense of what each path entails. Good luck with your decision!
