Smaller HF's and AM's for Unpaid Internships
Hello all,
I just wound up my job as an M&A monkey at a small midwestern boutique and am on my way to an M7 grad school. My goal is to break into investment management, specifically investing in public equities, and I'm currently seeking unpaid internships at asset management firms in NYC. My goal is to get some practical experience and buyside experience on the resume before even entering school and gain some contacts. I figured 6-7 months spent actually investing and researching ideas is time better spent than creating another pitch book.
I've taken the obvious step of reaching out to the school's alumni base with stock pitch and resume in hand, but haven't had much luck so far. The problem I'm running into is that most of the alumni base works at larger, more established funds that have regimented recruiting processes (i.e., hire only summer interns after the first year of grad school). I think I will have more luck targeting small AUM start-up funds that might actually welcome a set of extra hands to do some busywork. I've tried the WSO database already, but my guess is the list of small funds is not comprehensive.
My question is this: does anyone know where I can find a large list of start-up funds in NYC. I'm hoping I might have some more luck off the beaten path.
My only mandate is that the fund adheres to a value philosophy (i.e., excluding macro, momentum, algo, etc.). Beyond that, I don't care what form of fund or exactly what "shade" of value: L/S, GARP, long-only, distressed, event-driven, etc.
Thanks for any help and input.
P.S. I know there are strong opinions against using grad school to move into Asset Management. Please do not debate the merits of grad school on this thread.
