taking a cc accounting / finance class?
already have my SA offer but just don’t feel like i have the technicals down pat (liberal arts degree). I think i’d benefit from a community college financial accounting course and maybe a finance class or two over a winter break. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this a dumb idea?
A good solution could be WSP, I would think it is cheaper instead of enrolling in a CC class.
honestly i just am struggling to make certain things click. Lease accounting rules and some of the rx stuff remain pretty difficult. Would wsp help there?
What group will you be in this summer? If RX, then honestly, I am not too sure.
BB coverage that doesn’t outsource m&a, but just want to be as strong as these wharton guys
Well, if you received your group placement I would definitely learn more about certain multiples that are used regularly, and what makes the group different. i think WSP or TTS would be a fine resource for this. They have plenty of courses on modeling, powerpoint, and accounting. I think it worth a shot.
Taking a community college course in financial accounting and finance can be a smart move, especially if you're coming from a liberal arts background and want to strengthen your technical skills before starting a summer analyst position. Here are some suggestions based on the WSO content:
Financial Accounting: This is often considered the language of business and is crucial for understanding how to do the work in finance. It will give you a solid foundation in how financial statements are constructed and how to interpret them.
Corporate Finance: Advanced corporate finance classes can provide more in-depth knowledge that is applicable to valuation, which is a key skill in many finance roles.
Financial Statement Analysis: Also known as fundamental analysis or valuation, this will help you understand how to analyze a company's financial health and performance.
Additional Resources: If you have the opportunity, look out for programs like Training the Street, which may offer classes at your school. These can provide practical, hands-on training that's directly applicable to finance careers.
Remember, it's not a dumb idea at all to seek additional education to prepare for your role. It shows initiative and a commitment to your career. Plus, having a strong grasp of the technicals can give you a significant advantage in your summer analyst position and beyond.
