Tax Refunds?

So after working as an SA in NYC, I had some questions regarding filing taxes in 2010. I live in a non NY-state, "XY", and did not work there at all in 2010.

  1. Do I need to file NY State/city taxes?
  2. How much national/state refunds did people typically get from their summer analyst salaries (mine was 70k prorated) ? Did they file as a dependent or separately?
  3. And a general question: in general, is it advantageous for students who've made about 15 K over the year to file separately from their parents or as a dependent (if the utility function is to maximize the sum of the student's and parents' refund)?
