Tips on Networking to relocate to a different city?
I am currently looking to relocate to either Dallas or Los Angeles in the multifamily investments/dev space. I'm currently in the multifamily space and am applying on the usual job sites. LA has been extremely competitive. Do any of you have recommendations seeking jobs? I've reached out to recruiters recently but how many of you have had success reaching out to associates/VPs/MDs to learn more about the company and build a network out of state. It seems like HR is far more hesitant to recruit people out of state.
So, I am guessing from the context of your post you are still fairly junior (i.e. less than 5 yrs RE exp, title something like analyst/associate) and looking or willing to lateral to get the move. If not correct, please comment as it may change my thoughts.
Here is my ideas:
Work your local network - Chances are they know people in Dallas/LA and can maybe do introductions. People are connected in all sorts of ways, do not overlook the fact that locals maybe able to help.
Work your national network - Those are big cities, chances are you have school alumni you can reach out (even helpful if not directly in CRE but related fields like banking, or others that work with CRE types). If you are a member of any national orgs (like NAIOP, ULI, etc.) you can usually access the national member database. Reach out to the leaders of the Dallas/LA chapters, they may be very helpful in introducing you to local members. Also, local leaders who participate in national events/committees are bound to know people in other cities as FYI.
Schedule a "Road Show" and GO. You are right about HR/recruiters being hesitant to hire from a distance; costs, culture fit, etc. are all real issues. Thus, you may need to go the "extra mile" to get noticed. Set a time you can visit, ideally for a Mon-Thur during a normal time of the year, then contact firms asking for an informational interview, meet-and-greet during that week. Also, try and attend some local meetings (like of the NAIOP/ULI type) to meet people on the ground. This is costly, but it really shows commitment, and chances are you will get meetings. They may not be interviews, but that is what follow up is for.
Target larger, multi-city firms - So this is really based on the idea of staying within CRE but maybe shifting out of MF... Larger firms may be more open to moving people, and cast wider nets. You could also try applying for local jobs and attempt to transfer; if you talk with HR, they may be willing to tag your resume for multiple cities. This is not easy, but not impossible. I would recommend being broad with the list of cities if the HR rep asks.
Good luck, this is not impossible, but it may require more time, risk, and investment on your part.
