Transfer from London to New York at BB

I am an incoming summer analyst at an American BB bank in London, and I plan to eventually move to New York. I know this not something to worry about right now, I don't even have a guaranteed full time offer yet, but if I want to move to NY from London, what would the timeline for that transfer look like? How many years until it could feasibly happen, and at what point should I make my intentions known? HR mentioned to me that hiring is on the rise atm, and new nyc headquarters will be completed in next couple years which could potentially mean talent shifting towards nyc? I know this is all a while off for me, but advice on this would be much appreciated for future planning :)

First of all, you should focus on your internship performance to guarantee a full-time offer for next year. It is highly unlikely that you would be able to convert a London SA into a NY FT, unless you have US Citizenship, or you are a green card holder.

From what I have seen, BB international transfers usually occur at the 2-year mark, when / if you receive an A2A promotion. This is not guaranteed, however, as the office could be in a hiring freeze, but from associate to VP there seems to be a good number of opportunities to transfer. General rule is to start discussing about that after 1 year as an analyst.

If I were you, I would think about what your goals with this transfer are. You will most likely be sent with an L-1 visa to the US, which is an internal transfer visa. You will be tied to your employer without the ability to lateral (cannot change employers), and I believe banks usually only sponsor your permanent residency (green card) when you are about to become a VP.
