Two Competing Offers
For some background, I’m currently working in trading in London. Have been trading equities at a medium size firm in London for just over a year now. I joined right after college. I don’t really like the firm or the people I’m working with. Pay is much lower than market. I’ve applied to other firms in a bunch of different fields (Trading, banking, etc) in New York and London.
After a couple months of search and multiple rounds it’s coming down to two firms from which I both got offers. One is a trading firm in London. I’d be doing something similar at a smaller firm but with much higher pay and more responsibilities. The other is banking at a BB in NYC.
Here’s the problem, while I don’t enjoy being in trading anymore and banking is something I’m very interested in. The NYC role will require me to obtain visa sponsorship which I’m not sure is guaranteed even though the BB said they are happy to do what they can to obtain it. I have the right to work in the UK so that other job doesn’t have this issue.
The head of the department in the US said they were happy to push for my visa and if things don’t work out he’ll try to get me in the London office. He said I have the skills for and they’re always looking for people. He also said that there is a special intra-company transfer visa that would allow me to tranfer to the NYC office after a year in London.
I haven’t spoken to anyone in the UK office yet. I’ve managed to stall the offer for the London based firm for 2 more days but will probably need to give a response to the offer before I can speak to the banking role.
I’m down to three options:
A) Take the new trading role and spend at least a year there then reassess where I see my career progressing
B) Take the new trading role but wait on the other banking role then renege the trading role if I get an offer for banking. Notice period is 4 weeks so I would probably renege before joining (so not quitting)
C) Stay in my current role hoping I’m able to get the banking role for the London office and keep applying to banking roles if not.
As of right now my goal is to be in banking with the priority to be in NYC. I know that reneging an offer is a terrible look but the industries are very different so I’m willing to risk it. I hate my current team so am trying to leave as soon as possible. I’d hate turning down the trading offer and giving away a better role and pay just to not risk reneging the other firm.
Just looking for advice on what to do. Please share your thoughts!
