What are the benefits of networking if you go to a target?
Are there any benefits for a student at a target (Wharton) with a reasonable GPA (3.7) to network?
From what I've heard, networking can only get you a first round interview, which doesn't seem like it will be the major obstacle. Actually getting the offer is a different matter though...
how do you have a 3.7 at W when you don't even understand this simple concept?? Networking will open more doors then just doing a resume drop. Think about it, the kid with the 3.4 who goes to your school, networked and people know him now and actually are going to push for him. I bet vs someone who doesn't want to network (you), that he pulls twice as many first rounds, rather then someone who doesn't(you again) and is just another random person at the school.
You may have the grades, but so do many of your other classmates. I understand that maybe you are a really nice guy, and want to share the wealth, but if you don't network you are doing a disservice to yourself and giving your "friends" a better shot.
More 1st rounds=more chances at offers Less 1st rounds=less chances at offers
If you want I can do a graph!
I went to a top target. I can say that networking still did wonders for many of my friends, who ended up at GS/MS and McK/Bain/BCG.
The reason why it matters is that alums from those info sessions will be the ones doing the initial resume screening. Many Alums will recall the names of the students that they met / know. Believe me.
If you are skilled at networking and develop deep relationships with alums over time (say from soph fall to junior spring when you begin internship recruiting), you will have learned a lot about the job. And you can speak highly of the firm, the work, the people.
These are just a few of the perks.

your a rock star man. You dont need to so shit
You need to think about this logically. I don't care if you go to H/S/W or a city school in the middle of nowhere, networking is the key to breaking into banking, period. As others have already said, networking significantly increases your chances of getting the 1st round interview, and, whether you like it or not, there are many, MANY students from Target schools who get zero or maybe one 1st round interview out of 5, 6 or 7 applications because they think going to a Target means they are entitled to them. Will networking get you 7 of 7, maybe not, but it will definitely help you get several, especially if you network effectively.
Additionally, while networking helps you get that 1st round interview, it can also help you further along. If for example you get the 1st round interview, then talk with some of your contacts, get through the second round and are invited for a final round, you can absolutely try to use your current contacts to reach out to a few more people to express a further interest in the field, the profession, the bank, and yes, even the group. The more people the you and make a good impression on, the greater your chances of other people hearing about it and spreading the word come final round. It sounds far-fetched, but ibanking is a small world, and an even small world when looking at a single bank (obviously); news and information travels fast. When sending out those thank you letters, you can absolutely contact your network and catch them up on how it went, and even who you interviewed with - it may not help, but then again, it just may. If it is something as easy as emails and conversation, why pass it up - it just doesn't make sense.
