No such thing as signal. Just depends on how much leverage you have in the team. Early promotions are dependent on the following,

  • business need: a slot needs to be available
  • Sponsorship: key members of promotion committee need to vouch for you. Usually, D/MD. VPs can break your case but can’t really make it. Seniors are often motivated by political agendas ie Gender quotas
  • “Perceived” competence
