Work on a Big4 in Spain
Hey everyone, Im an economy student from Spain currently in my second year. I have really good grades and I study in one of the best universities here in Spain (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). Next year we have the option of taking a special course called programa coopera in which you complete all the subjects in 4 months (sept-jan) and work as an apprentice in a Big company (hopefully one of the Big4) for the Next 4 months, then you do the same at 4th course. What is your view of this program? Do you find It useful? If not, can you recommend me anything else? If you have heard about any similar situation just let me know. This is my first post so Im a bit of a noob here . Thank you!
Given that the chances of getting an internship at a bank, that is a great option. Having previous experience in a Big 4 would give you a better profile if you decide to apply for a FT position or a MSc or whatever you decide to do.
It all depends on what is your desired career, but in most cases, it would be useful. For sure there are better options such as interning at a BB, but it is not an easy task in Spain. UAM is good but BB recruit mostly from ICADE/Deusto/ESADE, so I would take the Big 4 role.
It's true that here in Spain it is very important from which university you are coming, not sure if UAM is really considered semitarget between public unis, at least it is a little bit behind Pompeu Fabra and Carlos III.
I studiedat one of those mentioned universities and it's true that we get OCR and we are pushed by alumni, which makes recruiting much easier. In any case I got my position without needing to network by applying directly online, so it's very doable.
Nevertheless, it is true that some BB do have their own targets, for example Citi in Spain is easier from Deusto than any other university, whereas to get a position at Goldman coming from ICADE puts you ahead. Same with ESADE, which is the one who sends most kids to UBS / Barclays / Credit Suisse / ING Direct... every university has its alumni and it is something worth to know. Also CUNEF is a powerhouse, but it's getting worse. I would say that Deusto seems to be improving and ICADE and ESADE remain, and will remain, at the top.
If I were you I would try to get an internship at a Boutique or attempt a Big4 TAS department, those will open you some doors, in any case, don't expect to receive a lot of opportunities, be wise and take the most of every interview you get. You have to sharpen your technical skills, get ready to explain why you decided to study at UAM and work harder than target students to step in, but if that's your will, you must chase it.
Thanks man, Im a bit lost with the vocabulary here, what's a BB and an FT?
BB: Bulge Braket. Big banks such as Goldman Sachs, CITI, or Bank of America are called Bulge Braket.
To help you a little bit with the vocabulary, here are some basics. This is in the M&A (Mergers and Acquisitons) context. Most of the content in this formu is about M&A.
IB: Investment banking. PE: Private Equity. EB: Elite Boutique: Advisory firms that get roles in big deals. MM: Middle Market: Firms that advise deals of medium size. IB shop: Small firm that is involved in small deals. SA: Summer Analyst position. FT: Full time position. GS: Goldman Sachs CS: Credit Suisse MS: Morgan Stanley etc...
Thank you so much! That was so helpful!!
Those won’t help you at all. People like Jamie Diamond want nothing to do with you unless you have a basic understanding of what a SEX DUNGEON is.
