Shit man, terrible move. UIC is a dump and in a terrible spot. I HIGHLY recommend you try and switch to Depaul's Lincoln Park area.
Second. The DePaul area is amazing, also very easy to get around by public transit.
Will look into it any other options ? I'm thinking of picking UIC b/c it's like ~ 15 min away from work
Where will you be working? Trust me, don't do UIC.
Consider the Gold Coast / River North / Streeterville. You can still walk to work (assuming you are in the loop), and it isn't miserable like UIC. Not quite as cheap, but I'm living in a studio of ~1k per month. Very safe, nice restaurants, decent nightlife.
If he is only staying for the summer it might be hard to find a short term lease in that area for cheap. DePaul dorms might be a better bet.
Also, unfortunately it's that time of year where it isn't so safe:

You gon get your face smashed into a... into a jelly!
Also does lake Mich get the E. Coli warnings still? I know the Indiana side gets it quiet a bit
Every now and then it does. Mostly on the IN and MI side. Doesn't stop people from hitting North Ave or Oak St. beaches.
Will look into it ty all
Any other places that are good?
Lincoln Park is a playground in the spring and summer. Plus it seems like less than half of all the DePaul girls go home for the summer, so you have a bunch of 18-22 yr old girls running around the northside with nothing to do but bar hop all day.
I live in LP now and it is less than 30 minutes door-to-door to where I work in the Loop. Probably closer to 20 minutes. Hell you could live as far north as Wrigleyville and still get to the Loop in 30 minutes. The extra 20 minute total commute each day is without a doubt worth the added benefits of living in LP.
You made me want to pack up all my belongings and jump on the first plane out of Laguardia to move to Chicago right away.
I interned in NYC after my sophomore year and had full time training this past summer there, and while I enjoy NYC in short stints, I just don't think the quality of life gets any better than Chicago during the spring and summer. You have the city, the beach, the women and the weather, and unlike NYC you have it all within a mile of each other. No need to go out to the Hamptons or the Shore. It's all right here.
Granted, this is from a pure lifestyle point of view. As far as career prospects, NYC is probably the better place to start off. But if I spend my whole career in Chicago I doubt I'll have very many complaints in my life.
Rogers got it right, as a DePaul grad I gotta advocate for DPU.
I agree with west coast rainmaker & really recommend Gold Coast/Streeterville/River North area. Lots of nice restaurants, very close to Michigan Ave for shopping, decent nightlife & close to the best grocery store in the city.
But also, try looking for a place above Roosevelt Rd. I've heard it's not so safe south of Roosevelt.
Yeah, definitely do not go south of Roosevelt. And it is worth mentioning that you might not want to live in the Loop proper - it really clears out on weekends.
Chocobo, out of curiosity, what grocery store are you talking about? I haven't found one I would designate as "the best".
Mariano's - it's on the New East Side. I'm not sure if it's really the best, but it's the best I've found. Compared to Trader Joe's, Jewel, Target, & Dominicks, I've noticed Mariano's almost always has fresher produce and usually has better prices depending on which day you visit. They have a very nice selection of alcohol, cheese, organic food, deli, salad bar, awesome bakery, florist, ethic food...um, also a variety of hot food ready for quick lunch/dinner selection..idk, they seem to pretty much have a section for everything. Haha
A lot of the crime comes from Gary
A lot of it comes from the West and South side. Hence why I suggested you look on the Northside or downtown. West Loop would be much better. So would South Loop.
Lincoln Park, Gold Coast, River North all the way
