New Member - How's the banking field in Miami?
I am a current high school junior and I am strongly considering the University of Miami for my undergraduate degree. (Also, which is a stronger choice at UM: Finance BSBA or Economics BSBA?) My first choice is Georgetown, but it is very hard to get into; Miami is a realistic option for me.
I'm interested in knowing how the banking field is down in Miami. Would a UM graduate have a strong chance to get a good job? I know the internship opportunities should be good as a UM student, but would I compete for most of the jobs with Ivy League students? I hear the hedge fund industry in Miami is picking up; what about the other banking fields? How sharp is the pay cut compared to NYC salaries?
Thanks in advance.
What banking field in Miami?
I did a good amount of research on Miami boutiques. Youll have opportunities to intern during the year and I dont think many students there want IB. Just going off speculation I would say if you have a better chance at UM than UF, and much better than FSU/UCF/USF.
If you get into Georgetown...go at whatever cost.
Georgetown is the goal, but I only have a 1990 SAT (670M, 670R, 650W) so I NEED to improve it for a shot at GTown. EC and GPA are pretty good. I will also apply to UVA and I hear it's targeted by banks. I don't have to worry about cost, especially at GTown, because my dad has a high-level position there.
My main problem is that I hate the northeast; I want to live in Miami. I don't want to sacrifice a shot at a Wall Street job for sunny weather, but I do want to be happy. Miami also has a great Medical Scholar's program, which intrigues me. Who knows, I might end up being a doctor.
I hear Miami is trying to grow the hedge fund field. Brickell Ave. in Miami has the second-largest concentration of banks after Wall Street; I've even seen it referred to as "Wall Street South."
If you are ok w/ consumer or commercial banking, then yes, Brickell is nice. If you speak Portuguese or Spanish, you may have a shot at IB outside of the states.
Don't go to college in northern FL because everyone there wants to get into finance, and there just aren't enough jobs in the area. It's like the Nickelback song "Rockstar" except everyone wants to work in AM.
If you hate the northeast, there is also: Chicago, Houston, Dallas, LA, SF, Atlanta, NC (mostly in Charlotte), VA, PA, D.C., MD. All of these are good options, but your best bets are probably: Chicago, SF (for the tech sector), and Houston (for the energy sector) in that order. If you don't like the NE because of the weather than look at Houston or SF. There is no reason you have to go to FL.
Are you comparing the quality of life in Houston to Miami? I almost dropped my iphone in the beautiful crestal clear ocean from the laughing outbirst
I suggested Miami because I absolutely love the school and would really enjoy it there. I am from Maryland so I would be open to coming back home to DC or MD for work. I have a cousin in Houston so I could work there as well. Never been to SF or Chicago.
Would I be able to get an IB job in Chicago, SF, or Houston with an undergrad degree from GTown or UM?
Any more info on IB field in Miami?
Unless you are in the Keys, there is no crystal clear ocean in Miami. Fucking jelly fish everywhere.
Obviously never been to Miami. Keys are for rednecks.
Been to Miami several times. Stayed on South Beach. Miami beaches are garbage.
The boats and houses along the water, on the other hand, are not.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Real garbage. ROTFLMAO
By the way, I guess millions of tourists from Europe and Latin America must be all crazy for visiting year round. They should go to Galveston instead.
Millions of people travel to Myrtle Beach and it is actually garbage...so why I do agree with saying South Beach is garbage is trivial your argument is terrible.
Why would they go there? More go to Rio for a reason.
They must go there for the banking field.
I got into and will be going to Georgetown! Thought I would give and update.
