NYC Safety - Hell's Kitchen (37 & 10th ave)

Hello!

To those who live in the NYC, I would appreciate some input on the safety in the lower Hell's Kitchen area. I will be interning in the city over the summer and likely subletting a place near 37th st and 10th ave.

Basically, is the area safe, especially in the evening? I'm usually a fairly alert pedestrian, but I've heard that the 9th/10th ave area can start to get sketchy.

Thank you!

Anything below Spanish Harlem is safe, anything below 96th street is nice, and anything below 59th street is some high class shit. I never understood this "safety" issue.

Disclosure: I'm from the Bronx.

This isn't 1980's Manhattan, kid.

This.

For reference, Milwaukee, Wisconsin has more than double the murder rate of NYC. Even the 'dangerous' places in Manhattan aren't that bad and are definitely not as bad as your grandma has been telling you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

IT'S FUCKING NYC IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE 'SAFE'

Totally kidding.

That area's a little boring but you're within walking distance of pretty much anything you want and yes, it's safe, the Westies arent' shooting the place up anymore.
