Being the only woman at the company’s party

Hi everyone! And a specially hello to my fellow girls of WSO!

I work in a WM boutique, and as the holidays are coming, my colleagues are planning a party. There are few other women (two, to be more precisely) at the company, but they don’t seem very excited for this event...

I always feel a little awkward being the only lady in a place full of men. Would you ladies go to the party anyway? And guys, what would you think about this situation?

Thanks a lot! ;) (Sorry for any grammar mistakes, I’m not US / UK based)

Obviously there are some toxic workplace cultures out there, but unless you work at a toxic office, it really shouldn't be an issue.

Perhaps this is a cultural thing, as you said you're not US/UK based.

In the US, the only thing I would worry about would be some of the guys getting a bit creepy when they're drunk. As you said the office culture is great, you'd be fine here.

Yeah, most corporate holiday parties I have been to included significant others/ partners. Maybe convincing them to include +1's might make it more balanced.

... although then you're bound to have one VP/ MD with a dumb trophy girlfriend/ wife, which can be kind of sad.

Friend of my told me a story about his ex-wife:

She just landed herself a good spot at an EB firm. After a really good deal they went for a party/vacation down in Mexico, and she acted like a fucking kid (dancing on tables, Ho'ing around, Etc.). After the trip, the wives of the men abover her started badmouthing and eventually word spread. The guys she was involved with started getting heat so they got rid of her.

TL;DR dont be a thot.

Just keep it to two drinks. If you can't keep it down when you have had two drinks don't drink. No one will blame you for it. If people insist, fuck them (not literally).

There is a good time to leave a party, and that's after all the speeches have been made - just go home. No one will notice or pay attention and you'll save yourself having to deal with a bunch of drunk idiots.

When you get older and have more experience and know your colleagues better you can spend a bit more time at the parties etc... For now I would keep it safe. This frankly goes for both male and female. If I had listened to my own advise as a youngster I would have saved myself plenty of embarrassing situations.
