Perhaps I misunderstand UK formality, but escalate it how? And to whom?

You definitely should not drag your boss to your boss’s boss, unless you somehow have an ironclad relationship with your boss’s boss. You should however start looking for what else is out there while biding your time to publicly undermine and ruin the boss who gave you the unfair marks whenever it would be most impactful.

No, shaking the tree will just result in stuff falling on your head for something this trivial (it's not like you're being put on a PIP after crushing it as a clear tactic to form a paper trail over nothing). If it really bothers you, just let it seethe and open up your inbox to recruiters if it starts to hamper progression.
